RENOVATION DAY | HOW TO TAKE CARE OF A BUILDING: TRAV12

What's the plan?
Plans are coming together for a big communal action to support TRAV12. In short: the idea is to have a RENOVATION DAY during which we'll clean, repair and paint parts of the buildings facade. There will also be live music, an art market, and other activities. 

Why?
We want to get rid of the argument that the TRAV12 building is in a bad state beyond saving. We believe that the building is well worth some love and care. We want to make a statement by showing the support the TRAV12 community has, showing how to take care of a building and showing how beautiful the building is.

What do we want from you?
We ask you to help us spread the word (under the radar, so not on socials yet), so we can make this a big direct action community event. Also, if you already know that you want to join in any way, please fill in the form below, so we get a picture of who wants to help out: with organising, with renovating, performing, providing food, or joining the new musical composition and performance of the RENOVATION SONG in the make…

We will also be making a film about this RENOVATION DAY in order to show the potential of the place and the community.

Wat is het plan?
De plannen beginnen vorm te krijgen voor een grote gezamenlijke actie om TRAV12 te ondersteunen. Kort gezegd: het idee is om een RENOVATIEDAG te organiseren waarop we samen delen van de gevel schoonmaken, repareren en schilderen. Daarnaast zullen er live muziek, een kunstmarkt en andere activiteiten zijn. 

Waarom?
We willen af van het argument dat het TRAV12-gebouw in zo’n slechte staat is dat het niet meer te redden is. Wij geloven dat het gebouw juist de moeite waard is en liefde en zorg verdient. We willen een statement maken door te laten zien hoeveel steun de TRAV12-gemeenschap heeft, hoe je goed voor een gebouw zorgt, en hoe mooi het gebouw eigenlijk is.

Wat willen we van jou?
We vragen je om het nieuws te helpen verspreiden (onder de radar, dus nog niet op sociale media), zodat we hier een grote directe-actie-communitydag van kunnen maken. Als je al weet dat je wil meedoen of op welke manier, vul dan het formulier hieronder in. Zo krijgen we een beeld van wie wil helpen: met organiseren, renoveren, optreden, eten verzorgen, of meedoen aan de nieuwe muzikale compositie en performance the RENOVATION SONG die momenteel wordt gemaakt…

We zullen ook een film maken over deze RENOVATIEDAG om het potentieel van de plek en de gemeenschap te laten zien.

We will come together, people of TRAV12, the Groningse Onderstroom, the Groninger Broedplaatsen Coalitie and other initiatives, creative and active people, to renovate, clean and paint parts of the facade and exteriors of the TRAV12 buildings – in an act of caring and re-imagining, to highlight and celebrate the importance and the value of these buildings and of the diverse community that gives them life, inhabiting, working and creating in and from out of TRAV12. 

From artists' spaces to communal living rooms, from a training gym to a mosque, from a vegetable garden to music and dance studios, from a school for drumming to a woodworking space and much more! These are examples of how different groups and individuals can work and live together; adding care and value to personal lives, the neighbourhood including the natural environment, the city and its cultural and public life, and our society at large. With the collective performance we wish to celebrate the importance and beauty of this diverse creative, social, innovative and unmissable alternative scene of Groningen as well as to highlight the need for long term and permanent studio buildings and broedplaatsen.

For THE TRAV12 RENOVATION PERFORMANCE there is song being created collectively with local composers and musicians: THE RENOVATION SONG. Both the renovation and the musical performance will be filmed and made into a video work THE TRAV12 collective RENOVATION and MUSICAL PERFORMANCE.

For The Renovation Song we are also looking for poets, writers, composers, musicians and singers to take part in co-creating and performing the song.

This is also a call to people to join this celebratory manifestation with other public proposals they would like add to the event. 

The event and the video are a collaboration between the artists Libia Castro & Ólafur Ólafsson, TRAV12 creators and organisers Kyra Berris and Heleen van den Broek, Groningse Onderstroom, performer and organiser Fiona van den Bergh, composer and musician Jelte Fossen and filmmaker Thomas Grootoonk, and everyone who will join the process and the performance.

Mensen van TRAV12, de Groningse Onderstroom, de Groninger Broedplaatsen Coalitie, en andere actieve creatieve mensen, komen samen om delen van de gevel van de TRAV12-gebouwen schoon te maken, te herstellen en te schilderen – als daad van zorg en verbeelding, om het belang van deze gebouwen en van de diverse gemeenschap die daarin woont, werkt en creëert, te benadrukken en te vieren.

Van kunstenaarsateliers tot gemeenschappelijke woonkamers, van een trainingsruimte tot een moskee, van een moestuin tot muziek- en dansstudio's, van een drumschool tot een houtbewerkingsatelier en nog veel meer! Dit zijn voorbeelden van hoe verschillende groepen en individuen samen kunnen werken en leven, terwijl ze zorg en waarde toevoegen aan persoonlijke levens, aan de buurt, inclusief de natuurlijke omgeving, aan de stad en haar culturele en openbare leven, en aan onze samenleving als geheel. Met de collectieve performance willen we het belang en de schoonheid van deze diverse, creatieve, sociale, innovatieve en onmisbare alternatieve scene van Groningen vieren en tevens de behoefte aan duurzame en permanente ateliers en broedplaatsen benadrukken.

Voor DE TRAV12 RENOVATIE PERFORMANCE wordt er samen met lokale componisten en muzikanten een lied gecreëerd: THE RENOVATION SONG. Zowel de renovatie als de muzikale performance worden gefilmd en verwerkt tot een videowerk: THE TRAV12 collective RENOVATION and MUSICAL PERFORMANCE.

Voor The Renovation Song zijn we nog op zoek naar dichters, schrijvers, componisten, muzikanten en zangers die willen meewerken aan het creëren en uitvoeren van het lied.

Dit is tevens een oproep aan iedereen om zich bij deze feestelijke manifestatie aan te sluiten met andere publieke voorstellen die ze aan het evenement willen toevoegen.

Het evenement en de video zijn een samenwerking tussen de kunstenaars Libia Castro & Ólafur Ólafsson, TRAV12, de makers en organisatoren Kyra Berris en Heleen van den Broek, Groningse Onderstroom, performer en organisator Fiona van den Bergh, componist en muzikant Jelte Fossen en filmmaker Thomas Grootoonk, en iedereen die aan het proces en de uitvoering wil deelnemen.
